BOARDING FIRE BOATS |
|
| |
|
Essential details of the situation:
This information was passed along to the Elizabeth, NJ. Fire Department,
which is in close proximity to Staten Island and only minutes away from NYC.
A FDNY Marine Officer provided the checklist below.
Lessons Learned or Reinforced:
With the increase of Fireboats that serve New Jersey certainly to rise,
there is a need to increase awareness. We need to insure that all
Firefighters who may board Fire Boats understand the seriousness of working
on watercraft and are aware of their surroundings and potential for injury.
Training:
Instructions for Land Based Companies that board Fireboats:
Members should respond wearing shoes. Members should NOT wear their
bunker gear or SCBA getting on or off the boat. Members falling in the
water wearing bunker gear are at GREAT risk.
Member’s gear should be stored in a safe area in a compartment. (Gear
left loose on a rolling deck can block the scuppers)
Each member should be given a personal flotation device (PFD) which
is to be worn on deck at all times.
Company Officers must keep their companies intact and under their
direct supervision.
Company Officers Must give the Marine Officer a copy of their riding
list.
Unless requested, only the Pilot, Chiefs and Marine Company personnel
should be in the wheelhouse.
Land companies should become familiar with the location of tools and
equipment.
Members should not stand or assemble near the mooring lines.
Unless requested, members should not assist in the untying or mooring
the Fireboat.
Responses are not boat rides. Each member on board is to remain
alert. Members should assume the role of lookout and monitor the handie-talkie
(Radio). Important information should be relayed via the Company Officer
to the Marine Officer.
