Upcoming Training Opportunities for New Jersey Firefighters and EMTs
Professional development remains a cornerstone of the New Jersey State Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association's commitment to its members. At the March 2025 meeting, Educational Committee Chair Danny Arroyo outlined an impressive lineup of training opportunities planned for the coming months, providing firefighters and EMTs across the state with access to specialized instruction in critical skills.
The February Educational Convention saw tremendous success, with over 800 members participating in various classes. Building on this momentum, the NJFMBA has scheduled several specialized training programs for 2025:
-
Thermal Imaging and Fire Behavior Course: May 17, 2025, at Union County Fire Academy
-
HazMat IC Class: July 15, 17, 22, 24, 29, 31, and August 5 & 7, 2025, at Union County Fire Academy (free of charge for FMBA members)
-
ICS 400: Tentatively scheduled for August 23-24, 2025, at Perth Amboy Fire Department
-
Drill Ground Instructor Course: Hosted by Bloomfield
-
Live Burn Training: Fall 2025 at Union and Monmouth County Fire Academies
-
NFA Safety Officer Class: Fall 2025, date to be determined
These diverse offerings reflect the evolving challenges faced by today's firefighters and emergency responders. From technical skills like thermal imaging to management-focused courses like ICS 400, the training calendar addresses both operational and leadership development needs.
"If you have a topic you are interested in, please let me know," Arroyo encouraged members, highlighting the committee's responsiveness to the educational needs of the membership. He also invited qualified instructors within the organization to assist with training delivery, fostering a culture of knowledge-sharing among peers.
The free HazMat IC course represents a particularly valuable opportunity, as this certification typically involves significant cost. By offering it at no charge to members, the NJFMBA is removing financial barriers to advanced training that enhances both individual careers and departmental capabilities.
Beyond technical skills, the NJFMBA also supports comprehensive wellness training. Members can access Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) classes, with multiple GRIN (Group Crisis Intervention) courses scheduled throughout the state from March through June.
The educational initiatives complement other NJFMBA resources, including the Peer Assistance Program, which offers support for mental health and wellness challenges. President Tyrone Smith encouraged locals to schedule presentations about these resources, ensuring members understand what support is available to them.
These training opportunities demonstrate the NJFMBA's holistic approach to member development and wellbeing, preparing New Jersey's firefighters and emergency responders with the skills they need to serve effectively while protecting their physical and mental health in this demanding profession.
